Surfing at Ambleside

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It was a nice sunny day a while ago and I decided it would be a good idea to eat my lunch at Ambleside and perhaps make a photo or two. I didn’t realize how windy it was and discovered, not only the wind, but that surfers were out in numbers I had not seen before. I can assure you that, although it was very sunny, the wind was extremely cold and I had to wear gloves to operate my camera. These folks were brave.

Enjoy this somewhat longer slideshow and let me know what you think.

A West Vancouver Fall Sunset

Here is a slightly long photoessay showing a sunset I stumbled upon recently in West Vancouver. All these shots were made in Manual Mode. The first shot was done from an inital vantage point setting the exposure according to the light meter. I began to experiment with the exposure and then moved around to achieve better lighting and even special effects. The last photo shows how framing the subject with darkness can create a mood and focus of view. I like the various twigs, etc. that point to the sunset as if to say, “Look how beautiful it is.”

More beach shots

Vancouver has been experiencing fog for many days. I can’t remember foggy days lasting so long. It makes for some very interesting photography. Once again, I took a few minutes at the beach.

Overcast at Ambleside

An overcast day can create a moody scene, one quite opposite of what you would see on a sunny summer day.

Log cabin (light painting)

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I was staying in a log cabin. At night it was pitch dark. I decided to try some light painting. This is accomplished by opening the shutter and using a light source to paint in the subject. I didn’t have a tripod, so I used a table and propped up my camera.

I took a small gravel road off the Coquihalla Highway and discovered these old log cabins.

Vancouver sunrise

I stopped very early one morning at the Hollyburn Club in West Vancouver. It was very cold, icy and slippery, but, I managed to get up on one of the decks (I am a member, so it was OK) and took these shots.

21st Anniversary

Yesterday was our 21st anniversary. Here is a short slideshow of some shots I took at Granville Island and the restaurant Dockside where we had a wonderful dinner. It was a great evening and you can read about it here on my blog.
